MERITORIOUS TEACHERS AWARD BY DELHI GOVERNMENT

Based on the feedback from students and the Principal, and the records of the efforts put in by the teacher in improving results, in research, extra-curricular activities and in corporate life of college, the Directorate of Higher Education, Government of the NCT of Delhi selects a teacher each from the Delhi government colleges for the award. Each award carries a citation and 1 Lakh INR. Following are the recipients of this award in the last few years:

Recipient of Meritorious Teachers’ Award 2020: Prof. Charu Khosla Gupta

Dr.Charu Khosla Gupta, a Professor in Botany is the recipient of the “Meritorious Teacher Award” instituted by Government of National Capital of Delhi for the year 2021. Her teaching career spans over 24 years with research experience of over 20 years. She has been an INSA visiting scientist to Slovenia in 2019 and also the recipient of ‘Teaching Excellence Award for Innovation’ by University of Delhi in 2015. Currently, she is actively engaged in environment monitoring and assessment with primary focus on climate change and plant-pollinator relationship besides measuring and devising means of mitigating ambient air pollution, for which she has collaborated with Josef Stefan Institute, Ljubljana, SLOVENIA. She has a total of 52 scientific papers/articles published in international journals of repute with 21 presentations in international conferences. She has been Scientific Chair and Judge at International Conference on Education (ICEDU) for last three years (2019-21) and has also chaired different tracks as Session Chair. She has successfully completed 02 major and 04 minor research projects with funding support from DST, University of Delhi and CSIR; of which one has been a bilateral project with Josef Stefan Institute, SLOVENIA- Ambient air Pollution in affected cities of India and Slovenia. She has also played a key role in the corporate life of the college by discharging her duties as Convenor of some of the prominent committees besides being Secretary of the Staff Council.

Recipient of Meritorious Teachers' Award 2018: Prof. Seema Makhija

Prof. Seema Makhija, an Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology, has been awarded with Meritorious Teachers’ award by Government of National Capital of Delhi in year 2018. Prof. Makhija has a vast teaching experience of 23 years. She is a dedicated researcher also. Her research areas are ciliate diversity and ecotoxicology. She has supervised two research scholars for their doctoral degree. She has been investigator of :

  1. One major research project funded by DST.
  2. One major research project funded by UGC.
  3. One research projects funded by University of Delhi under DU Innovation Project scheme.
  4. Two research projects funded by Innovative Entrepreneurship Development Cell, DST.

She has published her research findings in number of peer reviewed journals and also presented the findings in various national and international conferences. She has authored a book “Practical Manual of Cell Biology” for UG students. In addition she has authored number of chapters on diverse topics.

She is also a recipient of Best Teachers’ award instituted by University of Delhi in year 2007. Besides this, she has been actively involved in various other activities of the College. Sha has been the member of editorial committee for last so many years. She is the departmental coordinator for DBT STAR College Scheme. She has successfully organized various workshops, national and international conferences.

Recipient of Meritorious Teachers' Award 2017: Prof. Seema Gupta

Prof. Seema Gupta is the second-most senior permanent faculty appointed in the college in September 1992. She played a key-role in planning and setting up of the laboratories in the Department of Chemistry, to which she belongs. Over the years she has held various administrative responsibilities including Vice-Principal, Bursar, College Proctor and is now the Department Coordinator for the DBT-STAR Scheme. We wish to put on record her contribution as the Coordinator of the Steering Committee for the first assessment of the College by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) wherein the College garnered an “A” grade with an impressive score of 3.31. She is also the first Coordinator of Internal Quality Assurance Cell of the College. She is a team player with loads of perseverance and dedication and her conscientious ways make her command respect from one and all. Her academic interest include e-content development and hands-on demonstrations of laboratory techniques besides involvement in reviewing books and teaching –learning materials prepared for school teachers by NCERT. She has been instrumental in initiation of the skill development course on ‘Quality Control Chemist’ in the College. We wish her all the best for her future endeavours.

Recipient of Meritorious Teachers' Award 2016: Prof. Ravi Toteja

Prof. Ravi Toteja is an Associate Professor in Zoology. He is into teaching profession for the last 17 years. Prof. Toteja is actively involved in research. Thrust areas of his research are Toxicology and Exploring Biodiversity of ciliates. He has been investigator of:

  1. One major research project funded by DST.
  2. One major research project funded by UGC.
  3. Two research projects funded by University of Delhi under DU Innovation Project scheme.
  4. Two research projects funded by Innovative Entrepreneurship Development Cell, DST.

He has number of national and international publications in peer reviewed journals to his credit. Prof. Toteja has presented his research findings in many National and International conferences. Being an evangelist of Open Source, he has uploaded number of study materials – e-chapters, lecture notes, biology experiment protocols and created e-museum on open platform so that these can be available to those who cannot afford higher education due to some or the other reasons. Other educational content prepared are in open domain and is freely accessible to all. In addition to this, several gene sequences have been uploaded on gene data bank.

Besides academics, he is also involved in many co-curricular activities of the College. He was the convener of the Theater Society of the college and Coordinator of the Add-on course “Effective Communication and Personality development through Theater” (ECPDT). The annual theater production was initiated in the college when he was the convener of the Theater society. He was the member of the committee for organizing various events for celebrating Silver Jubilee, Rajatotsav, of the establishment of the college. At present he is the Vice Principal of the College.

Recipient of Meritorious Teachers' Award 2015: Prof. Gagan Dhawan

Prof. Gagan Dhawan, Assistant professor in Biomedical Sciences, ANDC has a teaching experience of 15 years. He is the recipient of the 'CSIR – Catch Them Young Award' twice during his post-graduation in Biomedical Science under HRD for Biomedical Research: CSIR-University Interaction Model. He did Master’s in Bio-informatics from the University of Edinburgh, UK (2011) under 'Universitas 21 Fellowship' from University of Delhi. His teaching interest spans several fields; including medicinal chemistry, bio-organic chemistry, computational biology and in silico drug discovery, biophysics and immunology. He has published his research work in International Journals of high repute.

Carrying expertise in Bio-informatics, in 2012, he started an add-on certificate course in Bio-informatics and in silico Drug Discovery and is the Coordinator for the same. He is a proud member of National Network of Mathematical and Computational Biology (NNMCB) funded by SERB, DST, Government of India, to provide training to students in mathematical and computational biology and to promote research activities. To enhance the learning and entrepreneurship skills of the students, he mentors them under DST-IEDC projects and ELITE Fellowship Program of the college and provides them hands-on training. He also supervises the M.Sc. / M.Tech. students for their dissertation projects.

Prof. Gagan Dhawan has also been the Visiting Faculty (August, 2011) at Laboratoire de Chimie des Polymères Organiques (LCPO), University of Bordeaux, France; Visiting Scientist at Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, University of Edinburgh, UK (June, 2012); Visiting Faculty, Department of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh, UK (June, 2013) and Guest Researcher at CSIR-IGIB, Delhi (June-July, 2014). In India, he is visiting faculty at NSIT for teaching B.E. (Biotechnology) students and at SISD, Delhi to teach DNB (equivalent to MD) students.

Recipient of Meritorious Teachers' Award 2014: Prof. Urmi Bajpai

Prof. Urmi Bajpai is one of the founders of the Department of Biomedical Science (BMS), introduced by the University at ANDC in 1999. Her vision and hard work has richly contributed in shaping B.Sc., Honours course in BMS. Her focus has been on giving hands-on training to the students and makes them independent learners.

Over the years, Prof. Urmi Bajpai has been sanctioned four research projects with a total grant of Rs. 77 Lakhs and that has helped her establish a well-equipped and modern laboratory for Molecular Biology. She has pioneered the Undergraduate research program in the college and about 125 students so far have participated in projects on Cloning and Expression of Mycobacterium tuberculosis genes and on Mycobacteriophages. She is recognized by the University of Delhi as a PhD guide and currently one PhD Scholar and one TATA-CSIR-OSDD Fellowship awardee are working under her guidance on "Multi-target therapy for Tuberculosis". She is often invited as a speaker in various National and International platforms for discussion on new models of education.

Recipient of Meritorious Teachers' Award 2013: Prof. Amit Garg

Prof. Amit Garg is working as an Associate Professor in the college in Department of Electronics for the last 23 years. He specializes in Graphene based materials and their applications in gas sensing and water purification, laser material interaction and Science Education. He has been the recipient of the Meritorious Teachers' Award (2012-13) with a cash prize of Rs.1,00,000/- of Directorate of Higher Education, Government of NCT of Delhi, Most Promising Innovation by University of Delhi(2016), Teacher Excellence Award for Innovation(2015) by University of Delhi. The project “Brain-Controlled Wheelchair” won the Second Prize in the Project Category (2018) on National Science Day organized by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Delhi and the Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS), Bengaluru along with University of Delhi colleges. He has completed eight research projects and has more than eighty research publications. He has two Ph.D. students working under his supervision, member of international scientific society, SPIE, USA and is a reviewer of many international journals. He has attended many international conferences abroad and has been technical session chair. He is the Chairman of ANDC inStart Foundation, a business incubator to promote start-ups funded by DTTE, GNCTD, member preliminary screening committee to shortlist potential Business Plans at Electropreneur Park, University of Delhi, South Campus and on advisory board of UDGAM, a business incubator funded by MSME. He has been a member of the National Committee constituted by University Grants Commission to draft the syllabi for B.Sc.(H) Electronics UG course under CBCS, subject expert to evaluate B.Sc.(H) Electronics syllabus under CBCS with LOCF by UGC, jury member of National Level Exhibition and Project Competition INSPIRE, DST, faculty adviser SPIE Student Chapter with biographical profile published in Who’s Who in the World.

Recipient of Meritorious Teachers' Award 2012: Prof. Sunita Hooda

Prof. Sunita Hooda is the senior-most faculty of the college and appointed in the Department of Chemistry since September 1992. She has served the college in various capacities including that of Teacher-in-Charge, Bursar besides serving as Convenor / member of committees like Examination, Fellowships & Awards, Alumni, Internal Assessment Committee to name a few. She holds the distinct record of being the first faculty to be appointed Vice-Principal and serving in the capacity of Liaison Officer of the college. Apart from being an able administrator she is a keen researcher and has to her name many research projects funded by UGC, DST etc. She has authored various school and college level books and published around 55 research articles in different national and international journals of repute. She is recognized for independent Ph. D. guidance by University of Delhi and has worked as resource person at Institute of Life Long Learning (ILLL). One student has completed his Ph.D. under her able guidance. For her immense contributions she was awarded ‘Meritorious Teacher Award’ by Smt. Sheila Dixit Hon’ble Chief Minister of Delhi, Govt. of NCT Delhi in May 2012.

Recipient of Meritorious Teachers' Award 2011: Prof. Sarita Kumar

Prof. Sarita Kumar, Associate Professor at Acharya Narendra Dev College, University of Delhi is a trained entomologist. In over 28 years of teaching, academics, administration and 18 years of research experience; she has contributed immensely to education at every level. She is a dedicated researcher and works in the area of ‘Insect pest and vector control’. She is credited with 49 research publications, over 70 presentations/publications in National/International Conferences and 3 e-book research chapters. Under her supervision, three students have obtained doctoral degree, six are currently registered, and two are working as RA/post-doctoral fellows. She is also Editor/Associate editor of International Journals and Reviewer in many journals of International repute.

Dr. Kumar has developed 3 e-modules for Post-Graduate Program under UGC-ePG Pathshala project and 12 UG program e-modules at Virtual Learning Environment, University of Delhi, India. Apart from mentoring students for M.Sc. dissertation; she works closely with several Government Organizations -NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU and SCERT for curriculum/educational content development and is key Resource Person in several training programs. She is credited with 18 Books on school science, 01 for UG students and has developed ‘Shabdawali’ on Environment terms for ‘Vishwakosh’; a project of MHRD, India. An Open Education evangelist, she facilitated over twenty workshops/conferences in diverse areas of Science/Open education and presented her work internationally. She has worked as Local coordinator of International Project on OER and also created online animal repository. She has delivered talks at renowned Indian organizations; HBCSE, TIFR, Mumbai; Indian Science Congress-Delhi Chapter, NCERT, Appejay Stya University, IGNOU, etc.

She is an able administrator and academic leader having worked as Acting Principal, Vice Principal, Bursar, Governing Body member, Teacher-in-charge, Coordinator of Admission and Examination committee, & Convener of several committees, besides the convener of various extra-curricular activities. Dr. Kumar has also been Member of many Committees at University level. Dr. Kumar has a great academic vision for skill development and mentored over 140 UG students in Innovative Science Projects and Entrepreneurship Initiatives. Besides her teaching/academic responsibilities, she has completed UGC Major Research Project, over 40 Summer Projects for Undergraduate students (ELITE scheme of College); 04 Entrepreneurship Projects (IEDC funded by DST) and 02 DU Innovation Projects.

An academic par excellence; Dr. Kumar is a proud recipient of many prestigious awards; ‘Meritorious Teacher Award’, Govt. of NCT of Delhi; ‘The Shiksha Rattan Puraskar’, IIF Society; ‘Distinguished Teacher Award’ from Former President of India Dr. Abdul Kalam, DU. She has also been conferred with - ‘K S Krishnan Teacher Fellow’ and ‘Anil Sadgopal CUBE Award’ for Popularization of Science and Cultivation of Scientific Temperament by HBCSE, TIFR, Mumbai; ‘WikiEducator User Page Expo Award’ by Wikieducator Community; ‘Open Access Competition Winner’ Among Ten Winners Worldwide selected by INASP (UK); ‘Featured WE’ by India page of WikiEducator.
